an eye for an eye
The bright red light of the setting sun covered the small clouds in all those gay colors, which mark the end of a beautiful and sunny day. A few single sunrays fell through the fragments of the broken window right above him and were refracted, just to caress his skin with their bizarre dance. The cold, metallic stairs he was laying on pressed his back uncomfortably, as he had not been able to reach the roof, the place he had chosen to experience these last moments of this dying day before it was buried in oblivion. Little luminous rubies of blood dripped down the stairs, forming small ponds, creating the illusion of good, old whine. It was his own hot, clammy blood leaving his body, just to colorate the grey metal. A silent sigh escaped his lips, as his gaze lost itself in the clouds in the amazing colored sky.
“What are you here for?” he asked coldly, without turning his head towards the lanky man standing a few steps next to him. L smiled and took a sugar cube out his pocket. With highly visible pleasure he put it between his lips and a few seconds later Light could hear the unmistakable noise of a hoggish person munching sugar. A pale shade of orange dyed L’s hair, tinged his skin, making it looking more vivid than in his whole lifetime.
“Are you going to accompany me?” Light enquired in an odd, unfamiliar voice, an atypical amount of fear resonating.
“You know as well as I do, that you won’t go neither to heaven, nor to hell, don't you, Light-kun?” L answered calmly and helped himself to another sugar cube. For the short time of one single heartbeat Light could not avoid to pose himself the question whether L was nothing more than a very realistic illusion or if he was standing next to him for real. A question he was not longer in the position to answer. The distinctive smell of clotting blood saturated the surrounding air, displaced the pure clime of the approaching night.
“What are you here for, then?” he repeated his question, but this time he turned his head, searching for L’s inky eyes. At first L did not answer at all, he was content with simply returning Light’s look, a strange expression in his gloomy eyes. Light snuffled, but he was not longer able to move any part of his body, as nearly every drop of his blood was allotted around him.
“Is your only purpose to just watch me dying?” The muttered words reached L with a bitter undertone; he had no possibility of lifting his voice any more. Slowly his world was drown in Darkness, there was only L’s silhouette left in his visual field, shining bright and pure. It was only now that Light could distinguish the expression in L’s face. An odd mixture of sadness, triumph and pity. That was the last thing he saw. Only one heartbeat later his whole universe went pitch black and his exhausted heart stopped beating. He could not see L hunkering down next to him; he could not feel his hands cupping around him, just as he did, when L died; he could only hear the words leaving his lips. The last words he heard before eternal nothingness devoured him.
“An eye for an eye, my friend.”
